Online Talk with Dr Alex Jamieson
Cats are one of the most popular pets in Ireland today, yet we know very little about how and when they got here. Did they arrive thousands or just a few hundred years ago? Who brought them here and where did they bring them from? With the help of cutting-edge scientific techniques, we can answer these questions. This talk will take you on a journey from the origins of domestic cats in Western Asia and North Africa to their arrival in Ireland. Cat attendance is strong encouraged, if well behaved.
Alex has recently finished her PhD at the University of Oxford and is now a postdoctoral researcher. She works on ancient DNA in the field of Archaeology. Her current research is looking at the interactions between domestic cats and wildcats across Europe.
